Those who know me know that I love analogies. Whenever I try to explain what it is I do or train new employees, I seem to always rely on analogies.

When we consult our customers on Scrum transformations, we are often quizzed about the stickiness of the transformation as a means to justify the ROI of an internal budget approval process.

The other day, I met with my new accountant for the first time. (Don’t worry. I won’t name him in case I get something wrong.) It was a routine kickoff meeting; we focused on re-classifying our Income Statement to comply with GAAP .

How, you may ask, did we arrive at the decision to give our product away for free?  The debate on what to charge, distribution types (hosted, web-based, etc.) and how to continue to develop the product, has gone on since development started in March 2004.  After more than a year of deliberation, we decided to create our software under the freeware (as in beer) licensing model. There’s no doubt about it…This was a gamble that Victor and I made and an investment in terms of blood, sweet, tears…and of course money and labor hours, it was a time in an entrepreneur’s career that you feel something in your gut, and you do it (Jack Welch talks about this in his new book, Winning which I would recommend).

After a failed hardware order from Dell, we went hardcore and went to a local retailer to get our hardware so that we wouldnt miss our deadlines.

Below is a picture from Michael's cell phone taken at Fry's after they had closed the doors, but they did stay open for our order, Vic,. Michael and I had been there for about 4 hrs.

Our sales rep was very happy. The specs of the laptops were outrageous for a local retailer.
